7B) Questions
Closed questions
Closed questions are formed using the "Π»ΠΈ" particle.
If the main verb in the sentence is "to be" (ΡΡΠΌ) in the present tense, "Π»ΠΈ" comes after the predicate (in the following example, "ΠΆΠ΅Π½Π°"), which itself comes before the verb: "ΠΠ΅Π½Π° Π»ΠΈ ΡΠΈ?" - Are you a woman?
For other verbs, the "Π»ΠΈ" particle comes after the verb: "Π―Π΄Π΅Ρ Π»ΠΈ ΠΌΠ΅ΡΠΎ?" β Do you eat meat?
Open questions
You typically build those by starting with a question word.
Question words in Bulgarian fall into two categories:
Interrogative pronouns
Interrogative pronouns have 3 different gender forms as well as a plural form. To choose the correct one always take into consideration the gender and number of the noun you are asking about.
| English | Masc. | Fem. | Neu. | Plr. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who? | ΠΠΎΠΉ? (1) | ΠΠΎΡ? | (2) | ΠΠΎΠΈ? |
| Which? | ΠΠΎΠΉ? | ΠΠΎΡ? | ΠΠΎΠ΅? | ΠΠΎΠΈ? |
| Whose? | Π§ΠΈΠΉ? | Π§ΠΈΡ? | Π§ΠΈΠ΅? | Π§ΠΈΠΈ? |
| What? | ΠΠ°ΠΊΡΠ²? | ΠΠ°ΠΊΠ²Π°? | ΠΠ°ΠΊΠ²ΠΎ? (3) | ΠΠ°ΠΊΠ²ΠΈ? |
Notes:
(1) The singular masculine pronoun has two forms, like "who?" and "whom?" in English. Use "ΠΊΠΎΠΉ?" when asking about a person that is the subject and "ΠΊΠΎΠ³ΠΎ?" when they are the object of the sentence. (2) There is no neuter word for "who?". When the gender is unknown, the generic masculine form "ΠΊΠΎΠΉ" is used instead. (3) Use the neuter form when asking "ΠΊΠ°ΠΊΠ²ΠΎ Π΅ ΡΠΎΠ²Π°?" (what is this?), "ΠΊΠ°ΠΊΠ²ΠΎ ΡΠ΄Π°Ρ?" (what do they eat?), etc., since in these cases there is no particular noun to set the gender.
Examples:
"ΠΠΎΠΉ ΡΠΈ ΡΠΈ?" - Who are you? "Π§ΠΈΠΈ ΡΠ° ΠΊΠΎΡΠΊΠΈΡΠ΅?" - Whose cats are they? (Whose are the cats?) "ΠΠ°ΠΊΠ²Π° Π±ΠΈΡΠ° ΠΏΠΈΠ΅Ρ?" β What beer do you drink?
Another way of asking about possession is to use "Π½Π° ΠΊΠΎΠ³ΠΎ":
"ΠΠ° ΠΊΠΎΠ³ΠΎ ΡΠ° ΠΊΠΎΡΠΊΠΈΡΠ΅?" - Whose cats are they? (literally, "of whom are the cats?")
However, contrary to "ΡΠΈΠΉ", "Π½Π° ΠΊΠΎΠ³ΠΎ" can't be used in an adjectival position (you can say "Π§ΠΈΡ ΠΊΠΎΡΠΊΠ° Π΅ ΡΠΎΠ²Π°?" but not "ΠΠ° ΠΊΠΎΠ³ΠΎ ΠΊΠΎΡΠΊΠ° Π΅ ΡΠΎΠ²Π°?").
Interrogative adverbs
Interrogative adverbs do not change forms:
| English | Bulgarian |
|---|---|
| How? | ΠΠ°ΠΊ? |
| When? | ΠΠΎΠ³Π°? |
| Why? | ΠΠ°ΡΠΎ? |
| Where? | ΠΡΠ΄Π΅? |
| Where ... to? | ΠΠ°ΠΊΡΠ΄Π΅? |
| Where ... from? | ΠΡΠΊΡΠ΄Π΅? |
| How much/many? | ΠΠΎΠ»ΠΊΠΎ? (3) |
Examples:
"ΠΠ°ΠΊ ΡΠΈ?" - How are you? "ΠΠΎΠ³Π° ΡΠ΄Π°Ρ?" - When do they eat? "ΠΡΠ΄Π΅ Π΅ ΠΎΡΠΈΠ·ΡΡ?" - Where is the rice? "ΠΠ°ΡΠΎ Π½ΡΠΌΠ°ΠΌΠ΅ ΠΊΡΡΠ΅?" - Why don't we have a dog? "ΠΡΠΊΡΠ΄Π΅ ΡΠΈ?" - Where are you from?
(3) When asking about a masculine noun not representing a person, use the numeral plural form:
How many men? β ΠΠΎΠ»ΠΊΠΎ ΠΌΡΠΆΠ΅? (normal plural) How many bananas? β ΠΠΎΠ»ΠΊΠΎ Π±Π°Π½Π°Π½Π°? (numeral plural)
