Exceptions
Most of these words have regular plurals and definite forms. However, here are a couple of exceptions:
ΡΠ°ΠΉ (tea) - The definite form is ΡΠ°ΡΡ when it is the subject of the sentence, and ΡΠ°Ρ when it is the object. Most words ending in -ΠΉ will use this -ΡΡ/Ρ article. The plural is ΡΠ°Π΅Π²Π΅ and the numeral plural ΡΠ°Ρ.
ΡΠΉΡΠ΅ (egg) - plural: ΡΠΉΡΠ°, definite plural: ΡΠΉΡΠ°ΡΠ°.
Note that some of these words do not have a plural, they are uncountable: ΠΎΡΠΈΠ· (rice), ΠΏΠ°ΡΡΠ° (pasta), Π·Π°Ρ Π°Ρ (sugar), ΡΠΎΠ» (salt) and Π»ΡΠΊ (onion).
Unlike in English, "ΠΏΠ»ΠΎΠ΄" (fruit) is not uncountable in Bulgarian: "Π΄Π²Π° ΠΏΠ»ΠΎΠ΄Π°" (two pieces of fruit).
Meat names
The words Π³ΠΎΠ²Π΅ΠΆΠ΄ΠΎ (beef) and ΡΠ²ΠΈΠ½ΡΠΊΠΎ (pork) are in fact adjectives, used as a shorthand for Π³ΠΎΠ²Π΅ΠΆΠ΄ΠΎ ΠΌΠ΅ΡΠΎ and ΡΠ²ΠΈΠ½ΡΠΊΠΎ ΠΌΠ΅ΡΠΎ (beef meat, pork meat).
Since it is obvious that we are talking about meat, the adjective is usually used alone, as a noun (a neuter one, since ΠΌΠ΅ΡΠΎ is neuter).
The word for chicken, ΠΏΠΈΠ»Π΅, really refers to the animal but it is very common to use it as the word for the meat. Similarly to Π³ΠΎΠ²Π΅ΠΆΠ΄ΠΎ and ΡΠ²ΠΈΠ½ΡΠΊΠΎ, there is also an adjective, ΠΏΠΈΠ»Π΅ΡΠΊΠΎ, that can be used to refer to chicken meat. ΠΠΈΠ»Π΅ and ΠΏΠΈΠ»Π΅ΡΠΊΠΎ can be used mostly interchangeably, but the adjective can be used to refer to a particular cut: ΠΏΠΈΠ»Π΅ΡΠΊΠΎ ΡΠΈΠ»Π΅ (chicken fillet).
To eat and to drink
The verbs to eat (ΡΠΌ) and to drink (ΠΏΠΈΡ) are part of the first conjugation group. Those are the verbs that end in -Π΅ in the 3rd person of the present tense. Their citation form usually ends in -Π° or -Ρ. These 2 verbs are mostly regular. Here are their conjugations:
| To eat | To drink |
|---|---|
| Π°Π· ΡΠΌ | Π°Π· ΠΏΠΈΡ |
| ΡΠΈ ΡΠ΄Π΅Ρ | ΡΠΈ ΠΏΠΈΠ΅Ρ |
