4A) Basics Part 3
To have, or not to have
"ΠΠΌΠ°ΠΌ" is the Bulgarian verb for "to have".
A verb can usually be negated by using the Π½Π΅ particle: Π°Π· ΡΡΠΌ (I am), Π°Π· Π½Π΅ ΡΡΠΌ (I am not).
However, in the case of ΠΈΠΌΠ°ΠΌ, there is a specific verb to mean "not to have": Π½ΡΠΌΠ°ΠΌ.
ΠΠΌΠ°ΠΌ ΠΊΠΎΡΠΊΠ° - I have a cat ΠΡΠΌΠ°ΠΌ ΠΊΠΎΡΠΊΠ° - I don't have a cat
Here's the conjugation of both verbs at the present tense:
| ΠΈΠΌΠ°ΠΌ | Π½ΡΠΌΠ°ΠΌ | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Π°Π· | ΠΈΠΌΠ°ΠΌ | Π½ΡΠΌΠ°ΠΌ |
| you | ΡΠΈ | ΠΈΠΌΠ°Ρ | Π½ΡΠΌΠ°Ρ |
| he/she/it | ΡΠΎΠΉ/ΡΡ/ΡΠΎ | ΠΈΠΌΠ° | Π½ΡΠΌΠ° |
| we | Π½ΠΈΠ΅ | ΠΈΠΌΠ°ΠΌΠ΅ | Π½ΡΠΌΠ°ΠΌΠ΅ |
| you | Π²ΠΈΠ΅ | ΠΈΠΌΠ°ΡΠ΅ | Π½ΡΠΌΠ°ΡΠ΅ |
| they | ΡΠ΅ | ΠΈΠΌΠ°Ρ | Π½ΡΠΌΠ°Ρ |
This is a standard example of conjugation of verbs of the 3rd group. These are verbs that end in -Π°ΠΌ, such as Ρ Π°ΡΠ΅ΡΠ²Π°ΠΌ (to like) and ΠΈΡΠΊΠ°ΠΌ (to want).
You can conjugate these two, and many others, exactly the same way:
| Ρ Π°ΡΠ΅ΡΠ²Π°ΠΌ | ΠΈΡΠΊΠ°ΠΌ | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Π°Π· | Ρ Π°ΡΠ΅ΡΠ²Π°ΠΌ | ΠΈΡΠΊΠ°ΠΌ |
| you | ΡΠΈ | Ρ Π°ΡΠ΅ΡΠ²Π°Ρ | ΠΈΡΠΊΠ°Ρ |
| he/she/it | ΡΠΎΠΉ/ΡΡ/ΡΠΎ | Ρ Π°ΡΠ΅ΡΠ²Π° | ΠΈΡΠΊΠ° |
| we | Π½ΠΈΠ΅ | Ρ Π°ΡΠ΅ΡΠ²Π°ΠΌΠ΅ | ΠΈΡΠΊΠ°ΠΌΠ΅ |
| you | Π²ΠΈΠ΅ | Ρ Π°ΡΠ΅ΡΠ²Π°ΡΠ΅ | ΠΈΡΠΊΠ°ΡΠ΅ |
| they | ΡΠ΅ | Ρ Π°ΡΠ΅ΡΠ²Π°Ρ | ΠΈΡΠΊΠ°Ρ |
There is The 3rd person singular of ΠΈΠΌΠ°ΠΌ is also used to mean "there is". Unlike English, it remains singular even when followed by a plural:
ΠΠΌΠ° ΠΊΠΎΡΠΊΠ° - There is a cat ΠΠΌΠ° ΠΌΠ½ΠΎΠ³ΠΎ ΠΊΠΎΡΠΊΠΈ - There are many cats ΠΡΠΌΠ° ΠΊΠΎΡΠΊΠΈ - There are no cats
Asking closed questions
Asking a closed question (such as one that can be answered by yes or no) is quite simple. For this, we use the Π»ΠΈ particle, which is added after the focus of the question. Usually, the focus of the question is the verb.
ΠΠΌΠ°Ρ Π»ΠΈ ΠΊΡΡΠ΅? - Do you have a dog? Π₯Π°ΡΠ΅ΡΠ²Π°Ρ Π»ΠΈ ΠΊΠΎΡΠΊΠΈ? - Do you like cats?
Note that with the present tense of the verb "to be", the focus of the question is the subject complement (in the example below, "ΠΌΠΎΠΌΡΠ΅") and that the subject complement comes before the verb (which means that "Π»ΠΈ" is effectively placed before the verb):
ΠΠΎΠΌΡΠ΅ Π»ΠΈ ΡΠΈ? - Are you a boy?
Bulgarian is more specific than English when asking questions, and the same question can be asked in different ways, by placing Π»ΠΈ after the focus of the question. For example:
ΠΠΎΠΌΡΠ΅ΡΠΎ ΡΡΠΊ Π»ΠΈ Π΅? - Is the boy here? (no emphasis) Π’ΡΠΊ Π»ΠΈ Π΅ ΠΌΠΎΠΌΡΠ΅ΡΠΎ? - Is the boy here, or somewhere else? ΠΠΎΠΌΡΠ΅ΡΠΎ Π»ΠΈ Π΅ ΡΡΠΊ? - Is it the boy who is here, or someone else?
