22.1) Conditional
Formation
The conditional mood is formed by using the following form of the auxiliary verb "ΡΡΠΌ", followed by theΒ past active aorist participleΒ of the verb:
- Π°Π· Π±ΠΈΡ
- ΡΠΈ Π±ΠΈ
- ΡΠΎΠΉ/ΡΡ/ΡΠΎ Π±ΠΈ
- Π½ΠΈΠ΅ Π±ΠΈΡ ΠΌΠ΅
- Π²ΠΈΠ΅ Π±ΠΈΡ ΡΠ΅
- ΡΠ΅ Π±ΠΈΡ Π°
Examples
"ΠΠ· Π±ΠΈΡ ΡΠ°Π±ΠΎΡΠΈΠ»(Π°)" - I would workβ¨"Π’Π΅ Π±ΠΈΡ Π° ΡΠ°Π±ΠΎΡΠΈΠ»ΠΈ" - They would workβ¨"ΠΠΈΠ΅ Π±ΠΈΡ ΠΌΠ΅ Π±ΠΈΠ»ΠΈ Π±ΠΎΠ³Π°ΡΠΈ" - We would be rich
Note how the participle has to agree in number and gender with the subject.
Like in English, the conditional is used for hypothetical sentences or for politeness:
"ΠΠΊΠΎ ΠΈΠΌΠ°Ρ Π΄Π΅ΡΠ°, Π½Π΅ Π±ΠΈΡ ΡΠ°Π±ΠΎΡΠΈΠ»(Π°)" - If I had children, I would not workβ¨"ΠΠΈΡ ΠΈΡΠΊΠ°Π»(Π°) ΡΠ°ΠΉ" - I would like some tea
Word Order
Short forms of the dative and accusative personal pronouns, reflexive particles, and the Π»ΠΈ question particle (all clitics), are placed between the auxilliary and the verb:
"ΠΠΈΡ Π³ΠΎ ΠΈΠ·ΠΏΠΎΠ»Π·Π²Π°Π»(Π°)" - I would use itβ¨"ΠΠΈΡ ΠΌΡ ΡΠ΅ ΠΎΠ±Π°Π΄ΠΈΠ»(Π°)" - I would call him
For closed questions, Π»ΠΈ can be placed after the auxiliary:
"ΠΠΈ Π»ΠΈ Π΄ΠΎΡΡΠ» (Π΄ΠΎΡΠ»Π°) Ρ ΠΌΠ΅Π½?" - Would you come with me?β¨"ΠΠΈΡ Π° Π»ΠΈ Π³ΠΎ ΡΠ»ΠΈ?" - Would they eat it?
