In this lesson we will see the vocabulary and grammar for words representing countries, nationalities and languages.

Adjectives in -ΠΈ

Consider the following sentence:
"Говоря Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠΈ" - I speak Bulgarian
"Говоря Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠΈ" - I speak Bulgarian
In English "Bulgarian" is a noun - that's the name of the language spoken in Bulgaria. In Bulgarian, however, "Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠΈ" is an adjective. The sentence is in fact short for:
"Говоря Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠΈ Π΅Π·ΠΈΠΊ" - I speak (the) Bulgarian language
"Π•Π·ΠΈΠΊ" means tongue or language, and is a singular masculine noun. Why then does "Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠΈ" end in -ΠΈ, the ending usually reserved for the plural?
It turns out that there is a whole group of adjectives that end in -ΠΈ in their masculine form:

You probably recognize пилСшко and Π³ΠΎΠ²Π΅ΠΆΠ΄ΠΎ from theΒ FoodΒ lesson (they are used as short for "пилСшко/Π³ΠΎΠ²Π΅ΠΆΠ΄ΠΎ мСсо"). "Бвинско" (pork), "агнСшко" (lamb) and "Ρ‚Π΅Π»Π΅ΡˆΠΊΠΎ" (veal) work the same way.

Definite Forms

As you can see from the previous table, the masculine and plural forms are the same (and thus, will be differentiated by the context). However, the masculine and plural definite forms are different:

  • Masculine (long): Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠΈΡΡ‚
  • Masculine (short): Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠΈΡ
  • Feminine: Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠ°Ρ‚Π°
  • Neuter: Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠΎΡ‚ΠΎ
  • Plural: Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠΈΡ‚Π΅
The adjective used to describe the language, Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠΈ Π΅Π·ΠΈΠΊ, can also be used to describe anything else Bulgarian:
    "Π₯арСсвам Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠ° ΠΌΡƒΠ·ΠΈΠΊΠ°" - I like Bulgarian music
    "Π₯арСсвам Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠ° ΠΌΡƒΠ·ΠΈΠΊΠ°" - I like Bulgarian music

Adjectives vs Demonyms

English often uses the same word for the adjective and the demonym (what people living in a country are called), but Bulgarian uses different words. Adjectives can be used for the language ("the Bulgarian language") or to qualify other nouns ("a Bulgarian man", "Bulgarian music"...).
"Π’ΠΎΠΉ Π΅ Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΠΈΠ½" - He is (a) Bulgarian
"Вя Π΅ Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΠΊΠ°" - She is (a) Bulgarian
"Π’Π΅ са Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΠΈ" - They are Bulgarians
"Π’ΠΎΠΉ Π΅ Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠΈ мъТ" - He is a Bulgarian man
"Вя Π΅ Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠ° ΠΆΠ΅Π½Π°" - She is a Bulgarian woman
You can see that the word for the adjective in "a Bulgarian man" is different from the demonym in "a Bulgarian". It is similar to how the words are different in English between "a Spanish man" and "a Spaniard".
Here's a table summarizing the vocabulary for a few countries:
